The 3-Step Messaging Check: Vision, Value, and Voice
A gut-check for business owners who want messaging that actually works.
Let’s be honest … messaging can get messy, especially for service providers.
You know what you’re good at. You know what you care about. But somehow, when you try to say it all out loud (or worse, write it down), it comes out sounding … well … a bit jumbled and unclear.
You second-guess your words. You tweak your copy for the hundredth time. You wonder why something that feels so clear in your head suddenly sounds vague, clunky, or like it could’ve come from anyone.
If you’ve ever thought, “This just doesn’t sound like me,” or “I know what I want to say, I just don’t know how to say it,” just know, you’re definitely not alone.
Messaging is one of those foundational pieces of your brand that impacts everything else — your offers, your content, your strategy — but it’s also one of the easiest to let slip out of alignment, especially when you’re juggling a million other things in your business.
But here’s the good news. But here’s the good news. There are 3 key things you can check to realign your message, cut through the noise, and make sure your words actually sound like you again.
It’s a simple, yet powerful way to step back and ask:
- Does this reflect what I stand for?
- Does it clearly communicate the value I bring?
- And does it sound like me?
So, if you’ve been feeling a little disconnected from your own words — or if you’re just ready to tighten things up — this is for you.
Step 1: Vision — Does your messaging reflect what you stand for?
Let’s start with the big picture: your why.
I know, I know … sometimes talking about your mission or your vision can feel fluffy. But here’s the thing — the “why” behind your business is often what fuels the emotional undertone of your copy. So when messaging starts to feel off, this is often the first place I recommend looking.
Your vision is the driving force behind your work. It’s what fuels your business on the hard days and gives your offers meaning beyond just what they do.
But when you’re juggling the daily demands of running a business, your vision can sometimes slowly fade into the background. You’re focused on client work, launches, systems, deliverables … and before you know it, the deeper “why” that used to be front and center is buried under a pile of to-dos.
That doesn’t mean your vision is gone. It just means it might not be coming through clearly in your messaging anymore.
Ask yourself:
- Is my why clear on my website, social bio, or in the way I talk about what I do?
- Does my messaging reflect the bigger picture of what I care about — not just what I’m selling?
- If someone stumbled across my content today, would they understand what I’m working toward?
You don’t need to spell it all out in one perfectly crafted paragraph. But your audience should be able to get a feel for your vision — what matters to you, what guides your decisions, and what kind of business (and impact) you’re here to build.
Step 2: Value — Are you clearly articulating the transformation you offer?
Now, let’s talk about value. Not in a vague, “I add value” kind of way. That’s just fluff. When I say value, I mean real, specific, tangible transformation. This is where a lot of service providers end up underselling themselves without even realizing it.
You might describe what you do — like writing copy, building systems, designing brands — but that’s not the part your audience cares about most. What they actually want to know is: How is my life or business going to look different after working with you?
Because value isn’t about your deliverables — it’s about the outcome.
And if that outcome isn’t clear in your messaging, your ideal client might scroll right past it, even if you’re exactly what they need.
Ask yourself:
- Am I clearly naming the problem I solve — and why it matters?
- Do I speak to what life looks like after someone works with me?
- Is it obvious how I help my clients move from where they are to where they want to be?
This is where clarity creates connection. The more you can name the transformation you offer, the easier it is for the right people to say, “Yep, this is for me!”
Step 3: Voice — Does your messaging sound like you?
Last but not least, let’s check in on your brand voice. Because while clarity and value are essential, if your content doesn’t sound authentically like you, it won’t feel right to you or your audience. This is where I see a lot of copywriting churn and frustration happen (especially with new AI tools).
The challenging thing about your voice is that it’s one of those things that can be hard to describe, but easy to recognize. That’s because it’s not just about tone, phrasing, or word choice — it’s the way your brand makes people feel. It’s the energy behind your messaging. And when it’s off? You know it.
Maybe you’re trying to sound too polished.
Maybe you’re unintentionally mimicking someone else’s style.
Maybe you’re relying too much on AI.
Or maybe you’ve just evolved—and your messaging hasn’t caught up yet.
Whatever the reason, your voice matters more than you might think. Because it’s the piece that builds trust. It’s what makes people feel like they know you, even before they’ve worked with you.
Ask yourself:
- Am I writing the way I naturally speak — or trying to fit a mold?
- Does my content feel like a true reflection of how I show up in real life?
- Would someone who knows me well read my copy and say, “Yep, that sounds like you”?
You don’t need a signature phrase or a perfectly defined tone guide. But you do need to sound like yourself. Because your voice is what makes your message memorable, and your brand feel real.
Bonus: Why this matters even more if you’re using tools like ChatGPT
Ok, I know I briefly mentioned AI in Step 3 above, but I want to pause to step up on a quick soapbox of mine. If you know me at all, you know I’m a big fan of leveraging AI tools as an extension of your marketing team. But you probably also know that I think AI falls flat if you don’t feel it solid strategic direction. So, if you’re using tools like ChatGPT to help you write content, this messaging check isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.
Because if you can’t clearly articulate your vision, value, and voice, AI won’t be able to do it either. You’ll end up with content that feels generic, off-brand, or like it could’ve come from anyone. (And if you’ve ever gotten something back from ChatGPT that made you cringe, you know exactly what I mean.)
But when you have clarity around what you stand for, what makes your work valuable, and how you want to show up? That’s when ChatGPT becomes powerful. You can prompt it with more intention. You can train it to sound like you. You can actually use it as a tool … not a substitute for strategy.
So, if your AI-generated content has been feeling a little “meh,” this is probably why. Messaging clarity always comes first, so hopefully this article can help get you back on track!
